Year 10 and 11 girls Hull Schools Five-a-side Competition

On Monday 12th November 2012 the Year 10 and 11 girls successfully defended their five-a-side ‘Hull schools’ title by winning the 2012 competition, at the Bonus Arena, in great style.

The 7 teams who attended play a round robin league and Archie got off to a terrible start by losing 2-0, to Newland High School for Girls!

After a little chat and reflection of their performance, the next games were played at a different level and the Archie girls were once again unbeatable.

Wins against Malet Lambert, Thomas Ferens, Andrew Marvel, Sirius and St Mary’s saw them in 2nd place overall, with the reward of a place in the semi-finals against Malet Lambert.

Malet Lambert had shown good form throughout the league stages and had been beaten narrowly in two of their games. Archie started well and were soon in the lead with a quality goal from Lauren Holmes. Archie continued with the pressure and where a different class passing the ball around with ease and looking a quality side compared to any of the other teams in the competition. It was a lovely move involving Alicia Iveson, Ellie Shepherd, Lauren Calvert and finished in style by Lauren Holmes once again, 2-0 Archie and a place in the final against Newland.

Archie had been beaten by Newland in their first game and the girls could have approached the final with a downbeat approach, however showing true Archie spirit they went into the game all guns blazing and it was Lauren Holmes who once again put Archie in front with another quality finish.

The Newland team were getting tired but showed good spirit and managed to put a good move together to beat Kallie ‘the cat’ Hamlett in goal. With it all square, and only a minute to go, things looked like it would have to be decided by penalties, but with a sudden break Ellie Shepherd picked up a stray ball and passed to Lauren, who then laid the ball on for Ellie to place the ball in the bottom left hand corner of the goal to win the game 2-1!

Great personal performances by ‘Player of the Tournament Ellie Shepherd’, Lauren Calvert, Lauren Holmes and Kallie Hamlett in goal, and solid team performances by Alicia Iveson, Sheryl Rodgers, Tiffany Hamlett and Megan Godfrey gave Archie the edge over all the other teams in the competition. We showed once again that by having a real team spirit we can some out as winners!
