The first game of the evening saw the under 16’s, who this season have seen a few new players from Year 9 added to the squad, taking to the pitch in a confident mood after seeing off St Mary’s Sports College in the semi-final.
Newland though were to put up a good fight and pressure from both teams throughout the first half resulted in both teams having to do some tight defending to stop the ball getting through to the forwards and stop them from getting any sort of a shot on goal. The game was very competitive and the girls battled hard to keep ahead with some excellent football from Lauren Holmes, Ellie Shepherd and Emily Smith in midfield. At half time it was all square at 0-0.
A half time team talk by Mrs F and some advice from Mr McKenzie saw the girls come out for the second half hungrier for the win and prepared to work hard to get it. Archie started to pass the ball around the pitch and showed how well they can play with some lovely football between the defence, midfield and the forwards.
Megan Godfrey played some nice football and put in some fantastic tackles to take the pressure off the rest of the defence who had all worked well together in the first half to halt any sort of threat from the Newland forwards. The ever hard working Zoe McGregor and Eleanor Dick in the centre of the defence was joined by Megan Withers and Sheryl Rodgers to keep it solid at the back throughout the game.
Midfielders Ellie SHepherd and Lauren Holmes linked up to pressure the Newland defence by drawing them out wide and leave the keeper exposed to all sorts of attack from the Archie forwards, Lauren Calvert and Courtney Gleeson, who took every opportunity to shoot on goal. With the added threat of Hannah Rawlings and Emily Smith, the Newland girls soon buckled and let Ellie Shepherd latch onto a high ball and head it into the back of the Newland net; After this Archie’s heads were right up and it was all Achies play for the majority of the second half.
With only 15 minutes on the clock Lauren Holmes collected the ball from within her own half and weaved her way through the Newland midfield with some great footwork and launched a terrific shot that saw the ball fly passed the keeper and had the watching ‘Archie crowd’ celebrating.
The game continued with the Newland girls coming back at the Archie defence and battling well to try and get something back but they were only to be denied by some great positioning in goal by stand-in keeper Tiffany Hamlett to keep them out with some great saves. A kick out of goal by the said Hamlett saw Holmes keep the ball, proceed down field and place a perfectly weighted ball through to the waiting Shepherd who sealed the game for Archie with a fantastic shot on goal that once again had the Newland keeper beaten. 3-0 Archie cup final winners 2012!! Congratulations girls!
