Today, the Church of England celebrates the consecration of Revd Libby Lane, our first woman bishop. For those of you watching from the sidelines, it may seem incomprehensible that the church has taken so long to reach this point. You may have been bemused by the division of opinion, and surprised at the variety of views expressed. It is incomprehensible to many of us who are more closely involved too! However, today is a great day. A day that many of us have longed to see for a very long time. You can read about the appointment here, First Woman Bishop if you are interested to know more.
There have been times when this all seemed pretty much impossible. There have been times when it seemed that the obstacles were so great, yet many people have persevered and prayed for this day to come. There have been times of disappointment, anger and sorrow. It’s reminder that progress doesn’t happen without commitment, pain, tears and robust, honest conversations.
May we have that level of perseverance in our work, as we support students to sometimes achieve what might at first seem impossible. Never give up!
