THE VISION AND VALUES OF THE SENTAMU ACADEMY LEARNING TRUST
The Bible (John 10:10) quotes Jesus as saying, “I have come that they may have life and may have it in all its fullness”.
We believe that young people achieve their fullest potential when they are inspired with a vision of everything their lives could become. As an academy, we commit ourselves to inspiring our students, and equipping them with the resilience and determination to unlock their unique gifts and realise their highest aspirations. We aim to achieve this through following distinctively Christian principles, and focusing on four key areas:
We serve our local communities by committing to welcoming all young people local to our academies, including those who present the most challenge. In keeping with the city-wide agreed Fair-Access Policy, we welcome those young people who need a “second chance”, and will encourage other academies and academies to do the same, that those young people being so welcomed will meet each other as equals in God’s love.
We serve our young people by providing them with a disciplined and rigorous academic environment, in which they are able to flourish spiritually, emotionally, academically and physically. We model graciousness and forgiveness to them, and expect them to exhibit the same attitudes towards each other. We make every effort to develop their skills so that they can become outstanding learners who are capable of self-direction and highly ambitious to serve our local, national and global communities.
We serve our staff by providing them with the support, challenge and training that they need to flourish as professionals, focusing in particular on enabling all to become reflective, proactive practitioners so that we create a self-improving system across the Trust.
We ensure that each young person is supported to reach their full potential as children of Christ. This includes achievement in all areas – academic, sporting, practical and artistic, but also as rounded individuals, ready to serve each other and to take their place in society. We aim to inspire them through a rich curriculum which includes a range of memorable activities, and we stretch them to achieve the highest levels of progress in relation to their individual starting points. Our commitment to the highest levels of pastoral care ensures that we nurture them them so that they may fulfil the unique purpose God has intended for them.
We determine to identify the causes of under-achievement, and to put into place strategies that lead to breakthroughs in the performance of its young people. To achieve this, leadership development is at the heart of our staff training programmes.
By the same token, our young people are shown the importance of providing leadership themselves, and are given a wide range of opportunities to do so.
Our love for our community is a central, guiding ethos behind our Performance Management systems, which place great value in encouraging all our staff to support each other in teams; colleagues are developed to be accountable to each other, as well as to our young people and their parents or carers.
The distinctive aims, vision and values of Archbishop Sentamu Academy
As the lead academy in the Sentamu Academy Learning Trust, our values of Trust, Love and Community are consonant with biblical teachings, in particular John 10:10:
Archbishop Sentamu Academy is a Christian community encouraging, challenging and enabling everyone to be the best they can be.
Through Christian principles, we aim to offer an education that transforms lives and communities. Everyone in our academy community deserves to be cared for unconditionally and valued equally as a unique creation, made in the image of God.
In our learning, in our work, in our relationships and in the ways in which we organise our community we are committed to valuing:
- The work and person of Jesus Christ, his example and his teaching;
- The equality of every young person in our academy, as being created in the image of God;
- Good relationships, based on mutual respect, trust, forgiveness and a fresh start every day;
- The importance of accepting the responsibility to make good choices, irrespective of the circumstances we may face;
- The contribution made by families, community groups and others to the well-being, education and nurture of our students and;
- The pursuit of excellence in every area of our lives, so that we can all reach our full potential.
