Polish Visit to the Academy March 2012
29th February 2012 admin

This week we are looking forward to visitors from our link school in Poland arriving. They will be staying with us for a couple of weeks and working inside the academy with our students. This should be a great experience.

Today our visitors from Gimnazjum nr 1 school in Poland, visited York. They experienced a walking tour in the morning and learned a lot about the history of the City and its people. They also had a terrifying experience at York Dungeons!
A great day!!

Sunday saw a wet and windy day at Whitby! The students visited Whitby Abbey, before making their way into town to try Whitby scampi or traditional fish and chips. There was plenty of snow on the moors on the way home too!
Our visitors finished off Sunday with an ice hockey game at the Hull Arena, would the Hull Stingrays create enough excitement to warm us all up?

Due the the weather, today’s visit to Dalby Forest for mountain biking was called off. The students, especially some of the girls, didn’t mind though as their day was replaced with a visit to Meadowhall in Sheffield for a spot of shopping and lunch.

In the evening our link school along with staff and students from Archie, visited Kuchnia restaurant on Beverley Road for a social evening. It was a good chance for everyone to catch up with friends made on previous visits and for others to make new friends.

An early start and a late finish but what a day! A walking tour around London made for tired legs but a great opportunity for our visitors to see some of the most famous landmarks in the world, in the most famous city in the world: Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, Hyde park, Oxford Street, Covent Garden. A visit to the British Museum and a ride on the London Eye completed an exciting day.

Another early start. Bags packed! Today was the first day in the Academy and at the end of the school day, all students and staff would go home to stay with families for the rest of the week.

On arrival at ASA, the students are staff were taken on a tour of the Academy and shown the fantastic new facilities we have here. They spent break with their Archie friends before taking part in a poetry and animation lesson with Ms Bratton. After lunch, representatives from each House grouped with some of the students from Gimnazjum to prepare for 2 house competitions.

Firstly, they worked together to produce a short play on ‘bullying’; the play was performed using only Polish, which meant the ASA students had to learn words and phrases in a language they had not spoken before.

Secondly, ASA students learned key words and phrases for a vocabulary language test. Our Polish link students were responsible for teaching our students their language.

The day ended with students taking part in extended day activities such as Mad Science and African drumming.

A visit to the Deep with Mr Knowles and Mr Atkinson was a great experience. In the afternoon, some of ASA new teachers delivered a lesson about Hull, its history, culture and people.

March 9, 2012

Students took part in a technology lesson with Mr Edwards, were they designed and made their own boxes. Some of the students then went to Mr Knowles class, to watch the dissection of a sheep heart, lungs and stomach.

A tour of the Guildhall with Ms Clark and Mr Knowles happened in the afternoon. The students and staff from Gimnazjum then had lunch and tea with the Lord Mayor before returning to their host families for the evening.

March 10, 2012

Students completed the Fish Trail with some of our students, in the City centre with Mr Horta and Mr Roberts; they saw a lot of the City centre that they hadn’t been able to see before. In the afternoon, they were able to watch the mighty Tigers, as Hull City took on Ipswich. After a promising lead, the game saw a draw despite Hull been by far the best team on the pitch (not biased at all!)

March 11, 2012

A morning with families, experiencing traditional Sunday lunches, shopping and visiting the seaside. At 5pm, Gimnazjum Nr 1 left Archbishop Sentamu Academy to return back to Poland.
